That same year, Chris Barbin decided to reunite a group of colleagues from his former employer, webMethods, to start a venture that would help businesses tap into programs and services accessed on the Web. Barbin, who was chief information officer at Borland Software in Cupertino, Calif., pooled $100,000 with Glenn Weinstein, Mike O’Brien, and Narinder Singh to launch Appirio.

VCs Have Their Heads in the Clouds

Stacey Higginbotham at GigaOm looks at the attention cloud computing is drawing from the VC community, using Sequoia Capital's invest in Appirio as an example. "The game-changing potential of those services has venture firms sitting up and taking notice," she says. "So far this year companies providing cloud services or building services on top of the cloud have raked in more than $70 million."
